Privacy and terms

This service stores things you have chosen to remember. That only works if you know exactly what is kept, who can reach it, and how to remove it. Here it is.

What is stored

What is not stored

Who can see your memory

You decide who opens your notes. Only the apps you connect can, each with its own key. Until you lock your notes (below), they are kept the way most online services keep your data: private and protected, and readable by the people who run the service. Once they are locked, even we can’t read them.

Locked notes

Your notes are locked. Only apps you’ve connected can open them, and knowsme can’t read them. You turn this on once, on your dashboard, by choosing a passphrase. After that there is nothing to lock or unlock: your apps just work.

Made for your projects and how you like to work. Keep passwords and card numbers somewhere else.

Where it lives

knowsme (formerly Portable Memory) is run by Godspeed Digital Ventures, Accra, Ghana.

It runs on rented cloud infrastructure and uses a small number of established providers: a server, a managed database that holds your account and your memory files, and a mail service that sends the recovery email and nothing else. They handle your data only in order to run the service, never for their own purposes, and none of them is given it to keep or to use. If you want to know exactly who they are before you trust the service with something, they are named on the security page.

Traffic is encrypted in transit, and the database is encrypted at rest.
